After decades of research and investment by institutions, industry and governments around the world, the first net energy gain from a fusion power experiment represents a landmark scientific achievement.

Fusion is an extremely exciting technology as it could potentially provide us with "plentiful, carbon-free" energy but "without many of the radioactive headaches of fission-driven nuclear power", according to Science.

Whilst much of Europe and the world is currently ravaged by energy supply problems, this would seem a timely breakthrough. However, fusion power stations are a long way off and several international projects are significantly over budget and struggling to make progress.
